and some of us who have already begun to break the silence of the night have found that the calling to speak is often a vocation of agony, but we must speak. we must speak with all the humility that is appropriate to our limited vision, but we must speak. and we must rejoice as well, for surely this is the first time in our nation's history that a significant number of its religious leaders have chosen to move beyond the prophesying of smooth patriotism to the high grounds of a firm dissent based upon the mandates of conscience and the reading of history. perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. if it is, let us trace its movements and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance, for we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us.

在中国有句古话：“不到长城非好汉”，而在埃及也有类似的说法“没到过卢克索，就不算到过埃及。”近日，有这样一则报道，一名网友在微博上发了一张埃及卢克索神庙的浮雕被人用中文刻上“丁锦昊到此一游”的照片，他这样写到：“在埃及最难过的一刻。无地自容。” 中国汉字，就这样出现在具有3000多年历史的埃及古迹上。看到这则新闻，我心中感慨万分，丁锦昊的“到此一游”给埃及的卢克索神庙带来了损害，同时损害的还有中国人的形象。目前虽然字迹已经擦去，但擦不掉的是部分中国人的陋习。烙在古埃及神庙浮雕上的“丁锦昊到此一游”，让多少国人感到群体的无地自容、羞愤不已。我们不能要求每个人都成为文明的典范，但至少我们每个人都可以坚守文明底线。
日常生活中也会看到让我们感到尴尬的场景：蔚蓝的天空一碧如洗，和煦的阳光洒满整个城市，一阵习习的微风拂过，绿叶轻轻摇曳，偶尔飞过一只蝴蝶摆动翅膀，展露妖娆的身姿突然，一声易拉罐落地的声响打破了刚才的和谐，随声望去一位路人随手扔下拉罐，大摇大摆的走了。也是这时，一个香蕉皮从车窗中快速飞出，在空中一个回旋，潇洒落地，那边的公交车驶来了，上车的人蜂拥而上，下车的人被堵在门口，于是推推攘攘，吵骂声不断。相信大家对这种现象不会感到陌生，听完后也都会自然而然地摇头。
难道说文明已经在我们的心中失去了重要性？不，其实生活中的文明并没有被遗忘，有一座城市里的人民重新拾起了文明。这座城市有一个花的名字，它叫做攀枝花。这个名字无不与山水相依，无不与阳光相依，无不与美好富足相依。攀枝花人民经过40多年艰苦奋斗，荣获“中国优秀旅游城市”、“国家卫生城市”、同时也是有名的旅游城市。阳光照在金沙江边，文明和谐的攀枝花如同一幅幅美丽的画卷。
清晨走在林荫道上，远远便望见清扫工人忙碌的身影。她戴着口罩，身着制服，手中拿着哈利波特的魔帚，挥扫出春的繁华，夏的张扬，秋的丰硕，冬的圣洁。就是这个平凡的人，她用自己的辛劳带走垃圾，使城市的各个角落充满洁净的气息，而留下的只有文明。在生命历程中，我们总会带走些什么，留下些什么。而他带走了垃圾留下了文明。

我觉得，总书记的“八荣八耻”令我充满力量，使我的精神受到极大鼓舞。“八荣八耻”的社会主义荣辱观是传统美德与时代精神的完美结合，一个人没有一点精神是不行的一个民族没有精神更是不行的。
以荣为荣，以耻为耻，本是一件十分自然的事。古人云：“人不可以，之耻，矣。”
然而，近年来，由于受物质利益的驱动和一些不良风气的影响，一些人的荣辱观出现了扭曲，把本以为荣的东西当成不可取，把本以为可耻的东西当成值得炫耀。比如，有人把投机取巧、捞取不当名利，当成是有本事；把一掷千金铺张浪费，当成是“有现代意识”。诸如此类，都是荣辱观混淆和扭曲的表现。
总书记的“八荣八耻”，强调以荣为荣、以耻为耻，就是要把一些人心目中扭曲了的东西纠正过来，弘扬我们中华民族的传统美德，以保持与当代文明社会相适应的道德观、价值观、荣辱观，不断推动社会主义文明建设向前发展，使我们所要实现的小康社会不只是物质生活上的小康，更是精神生活上的小康，道德生活上的小康。
也许有人说，文明时代的社会要更加开放和宽容，社会生活应该呈现出多样化，荣辱标准也不可能像过去一样的要求。不可否认，社会的文明进步为我们的行为提供了更多的选择，但是，这一切都不能离开人们所应具备的基本道德要求，不能没有基本的荣辱标准。如果没有这些基本要求和标准，那么社会主义文明社会也就建立不起来；即使建立起来也会因为人们失去道德准则而将文明社会葬送。
能否做到以荣为荣、以耻为耻，其根本，还是看一个人受什么样的思想道德观念的教育和影响。要保持正确的荣辱观，就必须认真学习社会主义道德思想，认真汲取中华民族优良传统文化，通过学习，纠正荣辱观上错误的东西。
不应否认，在我们周围不乏缺少信仰的人、唯利是图的人、不守信誉的人和损人利己的人，我们有时甚至因为他们而受到伤害。但这决不能因此而改变我们的道德节操和荣辱标准。这些人及其行为是个别的，是为社会所唾弃的。
