心理学范畴里使用适应概念时通常有三个角度，一是生物学意义上的适应，即生理适应，如感官对声、光、味等刺激物的适应；二是心理上的适应，通常是指遭受挫折后借助心理防御机制来使人减轻压力、恢复平衡的自我调节过程，这是一种狭义的适应概念；三是对社会生活环境的适应，包括为了生存而使自己的行为符合社会要求的适应和努力改变环境以使自己能够获得更好发展的适应，这是社会适应的概念。
目前解释适应概念比较权威的定义来自朱智贤主编的《心理学大辞典》，该词典中对适应的定义是这样下的：“适应是来源于生物学的一个名词，用来表示能增加有机体生存机会的那些身体上和行为上的改变。心理学中用来表示对环境变化做出的反应。如对光的变化的适应和人的社会行为的变化等。皮亚杰认为，智慧的本质从生物学来说是一种适应，它既可以是一个过程，也可以是一种状态。有机体是在不断运动变化中与环境取得平衡的，它可以概括为两种相反相成的作用：同化和顺应。适应状态则是这两种作用之间取得相对平衡的结果。这种平衡不是绝对静止的，某一个水平的平衡会成为另一个水平的平衡运动的开始。如果机体与环境失去平衡，就需要改变行为以重建平衡。这种平衡――不平衡――平衡……的动态变化过程就是适应，也是儿童智慧发展的实质和原因。”
这一定义至少从以下三个方面说明了适应这一心理现象的性质与特点：第一，心理适应是主体对环境变化所做出的一种反应；第二，心理适应是一个重建平衡的动态变化过程；第三，心理适应的内部机制是同化与顺应的平衡。这三点对于理解适应的概念具有重要的作用。但是，从全面理解适应概念的角度看，这一定义中有几个要点还需要做出进一步的说明：
第一，要明确适应现象是伴随着环境的变化而出现的，没有环境的变化也就无所谓适应或不适应。但是由于人们生活的环境（包括自然环境、心理环境和社会环境）实际上是处在不间断的变化中的，因此每个人每时每刻都存在着适应的问题，都会产生不断适应新环境的需要。从这个意义上说，适应是人的一种基本需要，是人的一生中随时都要面临的任务，也是人应当具备的一种基本素质。适应能力是个体生存与发展的必备能力，对不同个体来说，由于适应水平不同，最终会导致其发展水平上的差异。
第二，心理适应的根本目的是达到或恢复主客体之间的平衡状态，这是用平衡论对心理适应本质所做的一种解释。但是，在用平衡论来解释适应本质的时候，还应该进一步说明平衡与发展之间的关系。应当承认，平衡是适应的直接目标，适应的主要任务就是使主客体之间的不平衡状态重新恢复平衡。但从个体发展的全过程看，平衡只是相对的，暂时的，而不平衡则是绝对的，经常的。在个体发展过程中，由于一时的不平衡而引起的内部矛盾现象往往正是个体发展的动力，如果一味地保持平衡，反而会成为发展的阻力。因此在指出适应的直接目标是建立平衡的同时，还应该指出适应的根本目标是主体自身的发展。这样才能更好地反映出适应的本质。这种平衡与不平衡的辩证关系，反映了心理发展过程中矛盾运动的基本规律，因此也是我们理解适应过程的基本理论依据。
第三，用同化与顺应来解释心理适应的内部机制可以从一定程度上说明问题，但并不能说明全部问题。定义中所提到的同化与顺应都是心理调节的不同方式。所谓同化是指将客体纳入主体已有认知结构或行为模式的过程；而顺应则是指调整原有认知结构或行为模式以适应环境变化的过程。显然，同化与顺应都是对环境做出反映和对自身进行调节的过程。在此应强调指出，同化与顺应作为认知与行为的调节过程是受主体的自我意识支配，借助自我监控系统的作用来实现的。所以心理适应实际上是一个自我调节的过程，在这一过程中，自我意识的发展水平起着决定性的作用。
将以上几点补充进心理适应的定义后，比较完整的表述应当是：当外部环境发生变化时，主体通过自我调节系统做出能动反应，使自己的心理活动和行为方式更加符合环境变化和自身发展的要求，使主体与环境达到新的平衡的过程。
二、心理适应的类型
关于适应的类型，可以依据不同的标准将其分为不同的类型。比如孔维民认为，根据适应的对象可以将其分为对自然环境的适应和对社会环境的适应；根据适应的基础可以分为生理适应和心理适应；根据适应的程度可以分为浅层适应和深层适应；根据适应过程中是否有意识的参与可以分为有意识的适应和无意识的适应；根据适应过程中态度的积极或消极又可分为主动适应与被动适应等。[2]这些分类各有自己的依据，都有一定的道理。
除了以上几种分类外，还可以根据适应的效果分出消极适应和积极适应；根据适应表现的方式分为内部适应与外部适应；根据适应的内涵分为狭义适应和广义适应等。
消极适应是个体改变自己的行为或态度以适合外部环境的要求，这是一种基本的、比较被动的适应方式，其作用只是求得一时的内心平衡；积极适应是主体充分发挥自身的主观能动性，尽最大可能去改变环境使之适合自己发展的需要，这是一种比较高级、比较主动的适应方式。在个体发展过程中，生存与发展之间存在着十分密切的、相辅相成的关联，因此这两种适应方式之间也存在着不可分割的联系。事实上，两种适应对人都有重要价值，首先要能够生存，然后才谈得到发展。生存是发展的基础，发展是生存的目的。但从个体适应能力形成的过程看，通常是要先学会生存适应，然后才能达到发展适应的水平。

按照皮亚杰的观点，心理适应的内部机制就是同化与顺应的平衡。这是从发生认识论的角度对适应过程做出的一种解释。从这一角度出发，可以认为心理适应就是主体对外部变化所做出的一系列自我调节的过程，其最终目的是重新适应新的环境变化。但是，只用同化和顺应这两个过程来说明适应似乎过于简单了些。在解释社会适应中一些复杂的适应过程时有必要对此做出进一步的说明。结合认知心理学和社会心理学的有关理论，我们认为，心理适应的内部机制可表述为以下模式。这一模式表示，从出现不适应现象到重新适应中间一般要经历认知调节、态度转变和行为选择三个环节，其中认知调节又可分为外部评估和内部评估两个部分。具体运行过程以及各环节的作用大致如下：
1、认知调节
认知调节是适应过程的起始阶段，这一环节包括外部评估和内部评估两部分。
（1）外部评估
外部评估是认知调节的第一阶段，指主体对变化了的外部环境及其对自身发展所具有的影响作用进行全面了解并做出新的判断的过程，主要任务是确定外部环境中发生了哪些新变化，提出了哪些新要求，这些变化和要求对自身发展所具有的影响，在此基础上应能对发展中遇到的困难做出准确的判断，对新的角色期待形成正确的理解与把握。如果这个阶段中的认识、判断出现了偏差，就可能产生不适应的表现。比如，一个新升入高一的学生A面对学习成绩名次下降的新情况，出现了一时的不平衡即不适应的现象。为了重新恢复平衡，适应新环境，就要正确判断成绩下降的原因，然后找到有效的对策。首先要分析的就是客观的原因，如学习任务、学习方法等方面的新特点与新要求，并对此做出正确、合理的判断。如果这种了解比较准确、全面，就为有效调节打下了良好的基础。如果对新环境的新特点缺乏全面、客观的判断，就会给适应带来困难。
（2）内部评估
内部评估是指主体在对外部变化做出正确判断的基础上，对自身内部状态进一步的了解与判断。实际上这是一种在自我监控系统的参与下，自我评价和自我意向重新调整的过程。具体包括对因外部变化引起的内部不平衡状态的估计，对不适应现象的归因分析，对已有经验的检索与比较，对原有行为方式应对效果的审视与判断等。通常自我评价的结果会影响到自我体验的改变，如自信心的增强或削弱。同时，自我体验的改变也会影响到对行为目标的重新选择，包括对目标价值及成功概率的重新评估以及在此基础上所形成的新的自我期待等。比如，上面那位高一学生A对学习环境的新特点与新要求有所了解后，还要进一步分析一下内部原因，如对自己原有的经验和能力做出一个估计，判断自己是否有能力满足新的要求。如果认为名次的下降只是暂时的，主要原因是一时的不适应或努力不够，这时他的自信心不会受到影响，自我观念仍然是积极的；但假如认为名次下降的原因主要是自己的能力不足，这就会使自信心水平下降，同时会感到紧张和担忧。
