im still thinking about his words, and theyve changed the weeds in the garden. im spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savour, not endure. im trying to recognize these moment now and cherish them.
im not saving anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special. event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom… i wear my good blazer to the market if i feel like it. my theory is if i look prosperous, i can shell out $28. 49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing. im not saving my good perfume for special parties s; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party going friends.
someday and one of these days are losing their grip on my vocabulary. if its worth seeing or hearing or doing, i want to see and hear and do it now. im not sure what my sister wouldve done had she know that she wouldnt be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted.
i think she would have called family members and a few close friends. she might have called a few former friends to apologize, and mend fences for past squabbles. i like to think she would have gone out for a chinese dinner, her favorite food. im guessing. ill never know.
its those little things left undone that would make me angry if i knew that my hours were limited. angry because i put off seeing good friends whom i was going to get in touch with someday. angry because i hadnt written certain letters that i intended to write one of these days. angry and sorry that i didnt tell my husband and daughter often enough how much i truly love them.
im trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. and every morning when i open my eyes, i tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath truly, is... a gift from god.

I guess the job that I would like to do, it might not be the coolest job, but I think it would be a fun job and I think it would pay OK, would be running a small tour company, so taking small groups of people to exotic locations like India and having a sort of very intimate tour so that you don't stand out in the country you're in and the people you're taking on the tour get to sort of blend in and see some of the real views of the country.
Todd: Now, that actually surprises me a little bit because you're a very worldly person Jeff and you're very conscious about culture and things like that. Don't you worry that if you have a job where you're bringing people into another culture that you maybe ruin it or spoil the culture a little bit?
Jeff: Yeah, Todd, that's a good point, but I think it's inevitable that they're going to go anyway, so you can take them and take them on a very low impact tour, where it doesn't disturb the country so much or you can let them go with a big organization that sort of takes them through a country so it's like a zoo, where there's no interaction and they're sort of looking, looking through a window so I think if I take them it will be less destructive to the culture.
Todd: OK, well, so there are a lot of tour companies out there, so if you had a tour company what would you do differently? Like how would your tour company be different than the others?
Jeff: I think I would try to use a lot of local people in the service so instead of bringing people over with you and having them do everything, I'd sort of bring a lot amount of employees over and let the locals do everything. Let the locals guide, let the locals drive, try to include the locals as much as possible and it would be a better experience for the tourist as well.
Todd: So, I think you mentioned that you'd like to have your company for India. What is it about India? Why would you want to have a tour company there?
Jeff: Many people don't like India because it's dirty, noisy. It's smelly, hot. It's special place and I think you sort of lose a bit of your the social greed or possessional habits that you have, that you don't even notice you have them, that you acquire them when you living in the West and when you go to India they're stripped away. So I think it's just a special place and it's cheap and it's exotic and it's interesting and Indian people are beautiful people, really fun to be around.

对青少年进行“中华魂”主题教育活动，是社会、学校和家庭的共同任务。教育局和各办事处，各学校、各社区关工委将此作为对青少年进行社会教育的基本任务；各家庭将此看作是对孩子进行道德教育的重要载体；教育局和各办事处关工委以主要精力抓了学校、家庭、社区协调；各学校将“中华魂”主题教育活动列入重要议题，认真抓了学生读书活动的具体落实工作；各社区关工委利用“学雷锋、心向党、见行动、争当金色青少年”“道德银行”“四点半校外教育”和“学校放假，社区开学”的平台，认真开展了“中华魂”主题教育读书活动，并与创建“三无两有一关爱”先进社区紧密结合起来，收到了良好效果。通过“中华魂”主题教育活动的深入开展，出现了许多令人欣慰的现象：爱读书、读好书的人多了，学英模、争先进的人多了，积极向上、要求进步的人多了，关心集体、助人为乐的人多了，社会正气不断上升，歪风邪气遭到唾弃。由于全社会的积极参与，使我区“中华魂”主题教育读书活动形成了很好的氛围。如：xx一小的王xx校长大力支持“中华魂”读书工作，他提出“读好书，做好人，培育好孩子”的口号，倡议家长和老师“践行美德，认真组织，积极开展读书活动”，该校购书量具全区各小学校第一名，参加演讲孩子最多，该校三三班的平xx同学荣获xx市特等奖，我区表彰的12名读书好少年中该校就有两名同学荣获殊荣；东方三小的候xx校长，把读书活动与教育教学紧密结合，发挥少先队作用，发挥家长委员会作用，在全校大力宣传“中华魂”读书活动的意义，动员全校学生积极参与读书，得到大家的一致响应，该校参加读书征文的同学最多，获奖人数名列前茅；天津路小学的王xx校长亲自抓，亲自布置，把读书活动纳入德育工作考核，从管理上规范，从制度上激励，该校的李xx同学通过读书参加演讲比赛，自身发生了很大的变化，不但是一名品学兼优的好学生，更是孝心美德好少年，李xx的父亲说：“中华魂读书活动是可以种植正能量的善举，孩子的心境有了超越的发展是最有价值的工作，感谢关工委的领导和天小的老师。”xx一小的谭xx校长发动全校师生，创新开展了“弘扬美德，振兴中华”活动，学校成立了以校长为第一责任人的读书活动领导小组，全校2500名少先队员全部参加读书活动，还带动全校的学生家长与孩子一起读书，该学校学生演讲、征文比赛获奖率最高，教师荣获辅导奖的比例最高；中信小学的张xx校长把实现中国梦教育和“中华魂”读书相结合，积极与关工委联系，组织师生积极践行中华美德，开展丰富多彩的校园活动，是学生们的品质修养有了很大的提升；英语学校的姚xx校长把“中华魂”读书活动与“道德银行”存储活动相结合，与英语教学相结合，在全校开展了“美德在我校园，传承从我做起”的教育活动，全校涌现出了一大批学雷锋好少年和读书小标兵；xx二小的耿xx校长把书香校园作为学校的品牌来抓，把“中华魂”读书活动提升到建设书香校园的高度，领导的重视、教师的投入、家长的认可和学生的积极参与，确保了读书效果明显，该校的两名学生荣获区级“中华魂”读书好少年；东升二小的毛晓娟校长大力支持读书活动，充分发挥学生参与读书的积极性，重点培养好苗子，该校的王xx同学荣获xx区“中华魂”读书好少年称号；实验小学的马xx校长亲自组织学校的演讲初赛，发动教师发现人才、培养人才，积极为孩子们进行全方位的指导和培训；xx路小学的张xx校长带头读书感动了全校的师生；xx实验小学的张xx校长把“中华魂”主题教育活动与该校的“责任教育”紧密结合，在学校开展了丰富多彩的读书活动，他们学校的宋xx同学从三年级就积极参加“中华魂”主题教育活动，通过读书她决心当一名有奉献精神的好孩子，她报名到洛阳博物馆当上了一名小志愿者，不怕困难、风雨无阻的到博物馆为参观者义务服务，在当志愿的三年里她受到过委屈，面对过困难，但是她都以“中华魂”读本里先进人物的精神激励自己，鞭策自己，成为了洛阳博物馆里最漂亮、能力最强、全市第一名可以通讲珍宝馆文物的小志愿讲解员。经过层层选拔、比赛，宋xx同学一举获得了xx市“中华魂”演讲决赛“十佳标兵”。在这里特别要提出表扬的是xx路小学和xx西路小学的王xx、张xx两位校长，他们对“中华魂”主题教育读书活动的认识很到位，参与活动的积极性很高，组织很得力，虽然他们订书的数量不能与大学校相比，但是，按照他们学校生源的家庭条件和在校学生数量，完成读本征订任务的比例达到xx%。今年，这两所学校获得xx区“中华魂”主题教育活动优秀组织奖是当之无愧的。
各办事处关工委运用“学校放假，社区开学”平台，发挥“五老”优势，采取各种形式，在社区开展了丰富多彩的读书活动。长安路办事处关工委执行主任姚学君发挥自己是教师的特长，组织孩子们写心得、写演讲稿、才艺表演、演讲比赛，孩子们在活动中展示了才能、锻炼了能力、收获了成功，度过了有意义的假期。湖北办、武汉办、郑州办、徐家营积极组织孩子读书与活动相结合，采取走进社区做好事，践行美德育品质的方式开展社区“中华魂”读书活动。重庆办、长春办、珠江办、南昌办、工农办、周山办、天津办与学校结合、与辖区单位结合、与教育阵地结合组织学生进部队、进工厂、参观焦裕禄、杨奎烈等先进人物展览馆，把中华美德读书与身边的先进人物精神直观的结合在一起，起到了很好的教育作用。
（三）读书活动掀起
一是各小学校将《中华美德颂》读本纳入在校学生读书计划，并配合社区开展活动，使同学们在读书教育的活动中学习知识、感悟真理、激发爱党、爱国的高尚情操，增强团结向上的意识，弘扬拼搏奋斗的精神，树立为国家振兴而努力奋斗的远大理想。二是组织在校学生除完成读本学习内容外，积极参加班级读书演讲、年级读书演讲、学校读书演讲比赛活动，逐级选拔出参加全区读书演讲大赛的选手。三是在校学生积极参加撰写“中华魂”读书征文活动，展示学生和学校的读书成果。四是通过学生读书互动形式，陶冶情操、磨练意志、启迪智慧、提升素养、修炼志趣。从而引导同学们牢记党的重托、牢记人民的期望，成长为中国特色社会主义的合格接班人。五是全区“五老”队伍人员结合下基层、下社区、下学校，积极配合、督察检查各学校、各社区的“中华魂”读书活动。利用讲座、社会实践等方式，结合自己的亲身经历，讲改革开放取得的伟大成就，为孩子们搭建社会实践的平台，积极带领学生在实践中体会树立远大理想的重要性，使广大青少年树立了正确人生观和价值观。
同志们：“中华魂”主题教育活动，是由中关工委和教育部关工委共同发起和开展的，以青少年思想道德建设为主线，每年都有一个紧扣时代脉搏的主题，并编写了具有鲜明思想性的活动用书，非常适合青少年的特点。我区开展读书活动20年的实践，已经牢固搭建起了“老少共读一本书”的教育平台，使“一老一少”在读书中实现双受益、双提高、双发展，受到了社会各界的欢迎和认同，得到了区委、区政府的肯定和支持。我们深深体会到：紧扣时代主题，坚持读书育人，是推动“中华魂”主题教育活动健康持续发展的根本；党委政府高度重视，关工委精心组织，有关部门团结协作，是“中华魂”主题教育活动做实做好的保证；求真务实，创新方法，贴近青少年，是“中华魂”主题教育活动取得实效的关键；充分发挥关工委、老同志的优势和作用，是提高“中华魂”主题教育活动质量的基础。
目前，我区“中华魂”主题教育活动，虽然取得了一定成绩，积累了一些经验，但和全市其他先进县区相比，还有不少的差距。就我区来讲，活动开展的还不够平衡，覆盖面还不够广泛等等。希望通过今天的会议，同志们进一步提高认识，总结经验，巩固成绩，解决难题，使全区的“中华魂”主题教育活动取得更大成绩。
二、XX年我区“中华魂”主题教育读书活动的基本要求
根据中国关工委、教育部关工委《关于XX年开展全国青少年“中华魂”（放飞梦想）主题教育活动的通知》（中关工委〔XX〕18号文件）的要求，今年的内容是“放飞梦想”。各级关工委要进一步提高认识，突出“中国梦”这一主题，发挥“五老”优势，创新工作思路，拓宽活动载体，坚持典型示范，加强组织领导，推动“中华魂”主题教育活动向纵深发展，把这项活动打造成引导青少年健康成长的知名品牌，成为青少年进行社会主义核心价值观教育的有效载体。
社会主义核心价值体系教育是爱国主义教育的核心，是“中华魂”主题教育读书活动的“魂”，是青少年思想道德建设的“根”。我们要牢牢抓住这个“魂”和“根”，把握方向，创新载体。按照中央的部署和省市关工委的要求，把我区今年“中华魂”（放飞梦想）主题教育读书活动抓出成效。
（一）提高认识，积极工作
1、各级关工委都要站在讲政治的高度，进一步提高对开展“中华魂”主题教育活动重要意义的认识。紧紧抓住“中国梦”这一主题，充分发挥“五老”的独特优势，通过“老少共读一本书”、“老少共话中国梦”等形式，举办主题报告会、师生座谈会、双语演讲竞赛，帮助广大青少年深刻理解和准确把握中国梦的重要内涵，在青少年中播种梦想、点燃梦想，引导青少年敢于有梦、勇于追梦、勤于圆梦，把实现中国梦的满腔热情转化为刻苦学习、勤奋工作、报效祖国的实际行动。通过在全区开展“中华魂”读书征文和演讲竞赛活动，建立“中华魂”读书活动激励机制，形成学校、家庭、社会“三位一体”相互联动的读书热潮，汇集涧西区“中华魂”读书活动成果，总结提升读书活动效能，促进全区性“中华魂”读书活动广泛深入持久地开展，增强青少年为实现伟大的中国梦而努力学习、奋力拼搏的高尚情操，为培育和践行社会主义核心价值观积极工作，为我国社会主义现代化建设做出应有的贡献。
2、使命和责任需要读书。青少年强则国强。青少年如何才能强？读书、学文化、学知识，才能使自己强起来，才能更好地服务社会、报效祖国。在全社会，特别是在青少年中营造努力读书的氛围，是进一步加强和改进青少年思想道德建设，培育和践行社会主义核心价值观，提高全民族文化素质的迫切要求。
3、形势和任务要求读书。改革开放以来，面对西方敌对势力加紧对我国实行西化、分化、和平演变的图谋，面对经济体制深刻变革、社会结构深刻变动、利益格局深刻调整、思想观念深刻变化给青少年德育教育工作带来的挑战，进一步研究探索、加强培育和践行社会主义核心价值观教育势在必行。价值观教育的基础是读书，是明理，是励志，是修身。只有读书，才能明理，只有励志，才能修身，所以，我们必须从娃娃抓起，从读书抓起。
4、下大力抓好青少年读书活动。“中华魂”主题教育读书活动，必须采取学校、家庭和社区相结合的方式组织学生开展读书活动。通过读书、征文、演讲、歌咏、参观和社会实践等一系列丰富多彩的活动，唱响主旋律，有机地将主题教育读书活动融入培育和践行社会主义核心价值观教育工作的整体布局，适时、适宜的与精神文明教育结合起来，与和谐社会建设结合起来，与学校等部门的德育工作结合起来，与学科教学工作结合起来，与少先队、共青团工作结合起来，与培养青少年的创新与实践能力结合起来。使青少年寓教于读、寓教于学、寓教于行、寓教于乐；使主题教育更加贴近时代脉搏，贴近青少年的思想、生活和实际，推动读书活动向纵深发展。因此，必须下大力抓好“中华魂”主题教育读书活动，并将此打造成为引导青少年健康成长的有效载体。
（二）加强领导，积极组织
无论做什么事，重要在认识，关键在领导。各级领导和关工委一定要高度重视“中华魂”主题教育读书活动，切实加强组织领导。一是认真落实区关工委、文明办、教育局联合下发的《关于在全区青少年中深入开展“中华魂”主题教育（放飞梦想）读书活动的安排意见》（x关工XX【3】号），结合实际搞好读书活动的组织计划。做到层层有安排，工作有计划，事事有落实。二是解决好小学生读本问题。以教育局为主，制定出小学生读书活动读本征订保障计划。全区各成员单位都要献出一份爱心，为孩子们积极捐赠读本，是更多的孩子有书读。三是坚持以学校为主，社区、家庭联动配合，落实读书活动的人员、时间、内容和效果。四是继续抓好、抓实读书演讲和征文比赛活动。五是各办事处、社区，教育局、学校关工委要以此为契机，以主题教育活动为载体，充分发挥老同志的独特优势，配合学校深入开展各类教育活动。通过活动，培育青少年社会主义核心价值观，帮助青少年践行社会主义核心价值观，让他们具有振兴中华的精神支柱和精神动力，只有在全社会形成培育和践行社会主义核心价值观的氛围，引导青少年树立正确的世界观、人生观、价值观、荣辱观和崇高的社会责任感，时刻准备承担实现中华民族伟大复兴的历史使命，才能推进中国特色社会主义事业不断前进，实现伟大的中国梦。
（三）总结经验，创新实践
“中华魂”主题教育读书活动，是关心下一代工作的重要内容。因此，要不断总结经验，不断改进方法，不断提升读书活动效果。今年，洛阳新东方学校为涧西区的孩子们奉献爱心，他们不但为孩子们捐赠购书善款，还将派出志愿者老师，把《放飞梦想》读本的部分篇章翻译成英文，深入到全区各个学校为孩子们进行“中华魂”（放飞梦想）英语演讲培训和中英文征文写作培训。用中英双语歌颂实现中国梦的伟大理想，不但能增强孩子们的自信心，更是为孩子们提供了提高学习英语兴趣的平台，在全市我们的作法是一个创新。今年，我们将进行“中华魂”双语演讲和征文大赛，评选出100名双语演讲决赛选手。在“中华魂”双语读书活动工作中，我们要求：一是强调教育局要及时布置教育局关工委搞好系统组织、系统协调、系统联动和系统落实工作。督促学校做好读本征订工作，按照要求完成任务。二是强调学校在双语读书演讲征文培训工作中，学校关工委主任（校长）和主抓关工委工作的副校长、关工委副主任（即少先大队辅导员）要切实负起责任，与新东方学校派出的志愿者老师密切配合，协调好时间安排、学生组织和学校的初赛工作，推荐选拔更多的学生参加初赛和复赛。三是强调学校、家庭和社区联学联动。学生的读书活动不仅是学校的事，而且是社区和家庭的事；不仅是学生自己的事，而且是全社会的事。必须搞好三方联动，必须加强协调和指导。各级关工委要将学生读书活动作为关心下一代工作的重点，作为重要工作之一，作为校内教育和校外教育的共同任务。四是强调“五个结合”，体现“五个作用”。即：把读书活动和党领导社会建设所取得的伟大成就结合起来，发挥社会对比和社会巨变的育人作用；把读书活动和“学雷锋”活动结合起来，发挥学校德育教育主渠道的育人作用；把读书活动和青少年喜闻乐见的形式结合起来，发挥课外教育的育人作用；把读书活动和“学雷锋”实践结合起来，发挥学生从我做起的育人作用；把学和用结合起来，发挥“道德银行”存储活动的育人作用。五是强调学生读书活动实现“六个促进”，使“中华魂”主题教育读书活动促进创建“三无两有一关爱”先进社区建设；促进“学雷锋、心向党、见行动、争当金色青少年”活动的深入开展；促进预防和减少青少年犯罪；促进校外教育的各类社会活动，促进“道德银行”存储活动的开展；促进青少年良好习惯的养成。
（四）树立榜样，典型引路。
要结合“中华魂”（放飞梦想）主题教育读书活动，积极发现、培育、树立、推广先进典型。要扩大对多读多思、以读促教活动中取得明显成绩的老师、辅导员、学生进行表彰奖励。充分发挥典型的示范、带动作用，促进读书活动的深入、持久、健康开展。一是各级关工委要确立抓典型的意识。要注意发现典型、培育典型，做好典型引路。二是要有抓典型的方法。依照各自所管辖的范围，做到班有班的典型，年级有年级的典型，学校有学校的典型，社区有典型，教育局和乡、办事处都有自己的典型。三是要及时树立先进典型。树立先进典型要注意及时、适当、准确。今年，区关工委要结合工作情况，大力表彰一批先进单位和先进个人，以更好地推动各项工作的顺利开展。
